The wonder and secrets of networking

Since I started in practice 4-5 years ago I have become a real networking beast across a broad range of areas. Whatever frame of activity I am in I keep my eyes and ears open. And my experience recently has shown that one area does lead to another. As some of you will know I was very active in selling software based solutions in my previous business life. However markets develop and new techniques are required. The lessons learned from the networking I have done as a Mentor have proven to be extremely valuable in my new software venture Newera Controls. I have learnt how to get out there and be involved in a range of groups and opportunities keep appearing.

So what is the secret of good networking ?

Being open to any experience – do not create barriers to attend events or groups; go with the flow and things will happen.
And they will only happen if you go there with a listening ear and an interest in others. Being focused on telling people what you do does not work. By listening to others they will give to you in return.
Having said that you must be able to present your proposition succinctly and in line with the person you are talking to. That only comes with practice. So get out there and practice!
Go out to learn something new at every event you attend and note down what it is. If you haven’t learnt something; even if only how to improve your presentation then you have failed in your objective.
Recontact after the meeting via phone or email but in the interest of helping them first. Your needs come second. And really believe that; giving is much better than receiving. It is a reward in itself and will lead to you receiving eventually.
